FAQ | Cosmetic Penile Enhancement Surgeons | Phalloplasty | USA

What is my responsibility in this process?

In choosing to undergo elective Cosmetic Penile Enhancement Surgery, you must realize that a full four to six month (and actually even more) commitment to the staged surgery and postoperative process is necessary for the best results.

You must understand that not following completely the postoperative instructions may cause partial or even full failure to achieve the desired outcome.

Do you provide free initial consultations?

Yes. We provide a free, over the phone consultation. Usually no fees are applied for consultations but if there is one, we apply a consult fee to the surgery cost.

If I live out of town are you able to provide a consultation without meeting me?

Yes. Preliminary phone consults are very helpful and determine if we can proceed or postpone.

I live in a different Country and/or State; do you work with out of town/country patients?

Yes we frequently work with out of town/country patients. Please click here to see more info for out of town patients.

How much time should I book off for a typical surgery?

We would suggest booking off 2-3 days for a typical surgery.

How much time will it take to recover?

Usually less than a week.

After surgery will there be ugly scars?

Scars always result from any surgery. It is my job to make them inconspicuous.

Can you tell me about your anesthetist if required?

Our anesthetist, Carol, is a fully qualified, licensed Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist who has done anesthesia for over 40 years. Carol has worked exclusively with Dr. Giunta for over 18 in a wide variety of cases. Carol held a series of prestigious, high responsibility positions prior to coming to work at A.P.S.I.

Are the procedures painful and do I need to be on prescription level pain killers?

Pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with routine pain meds.

How many procedures have you performed over your career?

Over 20,000 of different kind of procedures.

What degrees to you hold?

(See credentials)

Do you perform surgery in your own operating room?

Yes – our state of the art, fully accredited facility is certified by the AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.)

What are the types of risks and percentage of patients that experience complications?

Any surgery carries risks but Phalloplasty is one of the safest procedures I perform.  Complications such as bleeding or infection are rare (in the range of 1-2 %) and easily dealt with.  Still rarer is loss of sensation or function.  Please read our section on this.

I have been doing Phalloplasty surgery for over 20 years with over six thousand procedures done.

Do you offer financing?

We work with the finance companies.

Will my medical plan cover any of the procedures?

Any procedures to repair trauma or improve function such as nasal surgery – but most are considered cosmetic and not covered.

Do I need to be in perfect health prior to surgery?

Health status and candidacy are at the judgment of the surgeon.  You do not need to be in “perfect health”.  We routinely get Medical Clearance from the family doctor if there is a problem in the medical history.

I smoke; can this be a problem prior to surgery?

Yes- but you can quit or cut way down and it will help a lot.

I’m on medications; can this be a problem prior to surgery?

Possibly – we need to know what meds you are on- both prescription and over the counter.

Is there a minimum or maximum age as to qualifying for safe surgery?

Age range is usually from 18 years to mid 70’s although exceptions are possible at the judgment of the surgeon.

Anyone under 18 needs parental consent unless they are deemed an emancipated minor.  I am very careful with young adults to make sure that this is a mature decision on their part.

Age alone is not the only criterion for determining who is a good candidate.

Are you Board Certified?

I am what is known as Triple Board Certified, that is I am certified by three different Boards:

The American Board of Otolaryngology
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery

Our facility is certified by the AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.)

See the Curriculum Vitae on the home page for more details.

Can you provide references from existing patients?

Yes- we can have someone call you.
