WHAT IT DOES: A surgical procedure to correct a disproportionate or undersized chin.

BEST CANDIDATES: People who have small, or underdeveloped bone structure in the lower jaw (mandible).

LENGTH: One hour.

RECOVERY: Because Dr. Giunta performs chin implants intra-orally; there are no external dressings or scars. Sutures can be removed after a week. There will not be any visible scarring externally, because the procedure is performed from within the oral vestibule of the mouth cavity (the area between the cheek and teeth). Swelling is usually completely gone within three to four weeks. Dr. Giunta has designed and patented his own line of implants, used specifically in this and other procedures, enabling him to obtain good results.

BACK TO WORK: In most instances, you can return to work within a few days.

Chin implants can yield a better overall balance to facial features. Chin augmentation will improve the appearance of the chin, bringing better balance to your facial features.

A silicone-polymer implant is generally best suited for intra-oral applications. Dr. Giunta will make an incision inside the mouth, below the external dental bridge of the mandible, and create a pocket for the implant. Because the implant itself is so small and flexible, it will easily pass through the small incision. Once positioned between the muscle and mandible (lower jawbone), the implant is sutured into place and the entry incision closed. Because of the intra-oral technique, there will be slight swelling in the lower mouth and tightness. Discomfort after surgery will be controlled with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Giunta, and you can also reduce discomfort using ice packs. It is generally recommended that you adhere to a soft or liquid diet for a few days after the procedure.
